Training for Community Advocates!

We are holding training for people across Grampian who may wish to volunteer as Community Advocates with Advocacy North East.

Advocacy is a way to enable people to make informed choices about, and to remain in control of, their own care and support.  Advocacy is needed because at times it can be difficult to tell people about the things you want, or to disagree with what someone has said.

The course will run over five days from 9.30am to 4pm (venue to be confirmed), and is free for those who wish to work as Community Advocates with ANE. Topics covered will include:

- What is advocacy?
- Communication skills
- Discrimination and stereotyping
- Conflict resolution
- Basic Child Protection
- Adult Support and Protection.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The course is also open to those looking to expand their skills and add to their CV without becoming a volunteer with us. For a small fee, anyone can learn more about advocacy skills for Continuing Professional Development! Lots of local charities have already taken advantage of our great value training course.

Working as a volunteer Community Advocate is rewarding, interesting and at times challenging and if this sounds like the sort of opportunity you would like to find out more about, we would be delighted to hear from you!

For more information, please contact John Ledger, or Laura Simmons (Training and Volunteer Coordinators - Aberdeenshire) on 01467 651604 or email advocacyne@btconnect.com

Advocacy North East Cares for Carers – It’s Official!

Advocacy North East is delighted to have been recently awarded accreditation as a Carer Positive Employer in Scotland at the “engaged” level.

This accreditation has been awarded by Carers Scotland who operate the Carer Positive Employer in Scotland initiative on behalf of the Scottish Government.

The Carer Positive award is presented to employers in Scotland who provide (and can demonstrate) a working environment where carers are valued and supported.

Here at ANE we recognise how difficult it can be, at times, for carers to juggle managing a job and their caring responsibilities. We also know that, unfortunately, many carers simply give up work because caring for an ill, frail or disabled family member, friend or partner and working becomes too much to manage.

In the event that this happens, Carers can face increased obstacles such as financial hardship and social isolation.  In addition, employers face the loss of valued, skilled and experienced workers.  We want to play our part in avoiding the human cost and detrimental impact of such negative outcomes!

Given that many of ANE staff have experienced, are currently experiencing, or may at some time in the future experience the challenging role of being a Carer, we felt that it was essential to use our knowledge and experience to implement workplace policies, procedures and communications that will offer real benefit and support to our “carer” employees.

We are really pleased that we have received accreditation to show that we have taken a committed step along the right path and, as you can see, we will be displaying our new logo with immense pride

Volunteer Friendly Award

Advocacy North East is proud to be one of the first groups to be recognised for their work in achieving the Volunteer Friendly Award for “Sustained Excellence” - awarded to reflect our consistent commitment to effectively managing and involving our volunteer taskforce.

One of only twelve voluntary organisations in Aberdeenshire to hold the Award, we are delighted to be able to evidence that appreciation of our volunteers is a core value for Advocacy North East.
