Are you interested in social justice and empowerment?

Would you like to support people in need?

Independent Advocacy is a way of enabling people to make informed choices about, and to remain in control of, their own care and support. Advocacy is needed because, at times, it can be difficult to tell people about the things you want, or to disagree with what someone has said. Advocacy North East provides free, confidential advocacy support for individuals with mental health problems, learning disabilities, and unpaid carers in their dealings with Health and Social Care Services. Our work is supported and promoted by the Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership.

We are a voluntary organisation, and our volunteers are at the very heart of what we do. Our Community Advocates are rooted in their local communities and tend to work mainly in their local area.

As a potential volunteer you will complete a five day training course which will provide you with all the core skills you need to become a Community Advocate.  No special experience is necessary for the role, just a keen mind and an open heart!

We value our volunteers! You will have regular one-to-one support and lots of opportunities for training and development.  We are delighted to be able to say that our volunteers often give their time to us for many years. We make sure that our volunteers are never out of pocket for the work they do on our behalf. We are proud to hold the Volunteer Friendly Award for “Sustained Excellence”.

Working as a volunteer Community Advocate is always inspiring and rewarding, sometimes challenging but never boring! It is a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills, and put your existing talents and knowledge to good use, while also enhancing your CV. If this sounds like the sort of opportunity you would like to find out more about, we would be delighted to hear from you!

Don’t just take our word for it though – this is what our current volunteers have to say!

“I get satisfaction from helping people and seeing a situation turned around makes me feel worthwhile.”

“I think it is a much needed role in the community and giving a little can mean such a lot to a vulnerable individual.”

“Volunteering for ANE is not only about helping others in your community but to help yourself during working with others through building confidence and self-esteem.”

“It’s a very supportive organisation, and very rewarding work.”
